2023 is a good year of gaming for me. I had the chance to play five AAA games while catching up with my ever-endless backlog before the year’s conclusion. The Game Awards are fast approaching leaving me to reflect on those five $79.99 games for contender of game of the year (GOTY). Street Fighter 6 is a shoe-in for best fighter and Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon snuck up on my expectations with its mecha greatness. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 while great, left me with more criticism than praise. Truthfully, my mind was made up in June with my GOTY being Final Fantasy XVI.

Fighting games can die. At least, that is the illusion a community can paint without diligent care for a game. Our social media age can influence a gathering with a screenshot without context and pass as facts. In this case, fighting games that have suffered from the lack of smooth net code have always been dealt with growing fatigue. Sure, the game you are describing to your friends is fun but is it playable online? A haunting question that plagued the fighting game community (FGC) for years that has finally been exorcised. Rollback netcode is the future, but what will be of its longevity?

Coincidentally, JRPGs also have an infamous reputation due to their substantial length. This juggernaut of a genre packs content and side quests for players to immerse themselves. While old JRPGs certainly made the virtual grind adventurous, modern games have opt for a friendlier tone.

Long gone are the singular, “Talk to …” mission or “Move to this area” objective. You are finally tasked with continuing the story or delving into the notorious side mission. An excursion that will either heighten your enjoyment or bore you with busy work. While other elements can spell for success or failure, the allure of a side mission is paramount.
Continue readingI have always admired fighting games from the late 90’s to early 2000’s era. From the arcade cabinets to the comfort of my PlayStation, fighting games was the genre for me. Early Capcom installments like Rival Schools, or Marvel vs Capcom 2 had me constantly coming back for more. It was not until much later when I was properly introduced to the competitive scene to my beloved genre. I found myself trying to prove myself online in Capcom’s revitalized Street Fighter IV. I had a wonderful journey with Street Fighter and found myself with the revelation that I could go no further.
